’ICONIC’ PLANS FOR TRIPLE KIRKS SITE 16/4/2008
A listed building which has sat derelict for more than 30 years in Aberdeen is set for a multi-million pound cash boost, it was revealed today.

The Stewart Milne Group has bought the A-listed Triple Kirks site on Schoolhill to turn it into an "iconic" office development. Plans will be submitted before the end of the year.

The red-brick tower and spire dating back to 1843, is considered one of city architect Archibald Simpson’s most impressive pieces. It was unique in Scotland with its three separate but adjoining churches, three congregations and one common steeple.

The terms of the deal to buy it have not yet been revealed.

Malcolm Deans, who leads Stewart Milne’s commercial property division, said, "Triple Kirks will provide a unique office environment in the very heart of the city, with superb views over Union Terrace Gardens."

Stewart Milne Developments acquired the building from Aberdeen based investment company Esson Properties.
An office development has been proposed for the site for a long time and Esson received planning consent for an £11million redevelopment back in 1999. But developers have struggled to move plans forward and find tenants.

This is because of its adjacent steep bank and the need to keep the spire.

A spokesman for Historic Scotland said, "It is a complex site within the Union Street conservation area and we would be happy to discuss options for the redevelopment of the building and its spire. "As it is A-listed, alterations would require listed-building consent as well as planning permission, which Historic Scotland is likely to be consulted on."

Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce chief executive Geoff Runcie said: "We are pleased that a quality office development is envisaged for this valuable and strategic city centre location."
